Of Poseidon By Anna Banks

Title: Of Poseidon
Author: Anna Banks
Series:  Of Poseidon #1
Publisher: Feiwel & Friends
Paperback: 336 pages
Publication Date: May 22nd 2012
Galen, a Syrena prince, searches land for a girl he's heard can communicate with fish. It’s while Emma is on vacation at the beach that she meets Galen. Although their connection is immediate and powerful, Galen's not fully convinced that Emma's the one he's been looking for. That is, until a deadly encounter with a shark proves that Emma and her Gift may be the only thing that can save his kingdom. He needs her help--no matter what the risk.

“Of Poseidon” gives you an inventive take on mermaid lore, which makes this story truly unique.  It is one of those books that charm’s you from the very first summon, and doesn’t let go until it’s over. Of Poseidon is a bouncy, humorous and thrilling read, with a stroke of mystery and a ton of “ OMG, this is maddening” kind of romance that will ultimately capture your heart with its pull.  Anna Banks describes her Syrena culture into two kingdoms, Triton and Poseidon.  I was completely pleased with how Banks reformed their story into her own fictional masterpiece. I love the originality and it was a good break from vamp’s shifters, Dom’s and fallen angels…
“Of Poseidon” centers on Emma, a girl who can communicate with sea creatures, ALL sea creatures and Galen, a prince and human ambassador. Galen is a fish prince who takes his duties seriously, suddenly
Finds himself torn between duty and his heart. Emma, is nothing he’d ever witness or seen before, she has all the qualities of a Syrena and its seemed she possess the gift of Poseidon, yet she can’t sprout tails underwater to save her life. This is a story of a boy, who meets a girl, falls in love and duty might just tear them apart. Anna Banks is a new author to watch out for. Banks has woven this story so flawlessly that if you’d try hard enough you could see the scenes in your head. One thing I really like about this book is that this story is written in two POV’s  (all the better). Her secondary character are to die for… funny, witty doesn’t begin to justify how charming they could be! I loved it!  in the end… though, I was left unsatisfied because of the cliffy! No matter I’d wait. Because I am going to read book two!

I am actually sad...why? Because I have to wait a whole year before I get book two...how could Anna do this to me. Of Poseidon was a great romantic page-turner. Story flowed well leaving you with a cliffhanger that just has you screaming in the end. In this world there are humans and mermaid/Syrena (who are divided into 2 kingdoms- Triton and Poseidon). We follow two POV in this story, one Galen super hot and sexy merman/Syrena who is kind of like the mermaid- human ambassador. He keeps all communications open in both worlds. And then clumsy super cute girl-Emma who we are unclear if she is mermaid and human-picture human with a few mermaid skills. Emma meets Galen by chance and it is from here these two embark on a journey to find the truth. What is Emma? During all this Galen finds himself falling for Emma and torn between choosing love and duty- (isn't that a bitch) I also fell in love with Galen's sister and best friend their disturbed love relationship was like a comic relief in the tale. Emma's mother seems like a somewhat overaggressive as most teenagers will find them and Rachel's character seems to be the one to balance off Galen's transition here in the human world. Fell in love with the book can't wait for the next one. Give it two thumbs up.

This book was especially exciting to read because I was just able to meet Anna Banks at one of her stops on the Fierce Reads tour. Let me say that the witty and hilarious way in which Banks writes her books and portrays her characters reflects her real life personality. This woman is hilarious and meeting her in person made reading her book that much more enjoyable.

Of Poseidon is a story of a young girl named Emma and a boy named Galen. Galen, a prince of the Syrena must search the shores for a girl he believes can communicate with fish. As he tries to accomplish his task, he quite literally runs into Emma and her friend Chloe on the beaches of Florida. While he is sure that there is something special about Emma, he's not positive that she is the one he's searching for. After tragedy strikes and Emma begins to change, Galen finds that she is the girl he is looking for and is possibly the only one who can save his people.
