Night Huntress Series by Jeaniene Frost

Title: Halfway to the Grave
Author: Jeaniene Frost
Series: Night Huntress #1
Publisher: Avon
Paperback: 358
Publication Date: October 30th 2007
Half-vampire Catherine Crawfield is going after the undead with a vengeance, hoping that one of these deadbeats is her father—the one responsible for ruining her mother's life. Then she's captured by Bones, a vampire bounty hunter, and is forced into an unholy partnership. In exchange for finding her father, Cat agrees to train with the sexy night stalker until her battle reflexes are as sharp as his fangs. She's amazed she doesn't end up as his dinner—are there actually good vampires? Pretty soon Bones will have her convinced that being half-dead doesn't have to be all bad. But before she can enjoy her newfound status as kick-ass demon hunter, Cat and Bones are pursued by a group of killers. Now Cat will have to choose a side . . . and Bones is turning out to be as tempting as any man with a heartbeat.
Don’t ask me how I found this book because I honestly don’t remember…. All I know is that, I read the complete collection, the entire work of fiction by this lovely author in one week and re-read the book again before my review!!!
I adored this adult series, I love the witty conversation, the English slangs, the heat… it brings… while reading and oh yes the sexual tips and images it smothers! Fact is I love the storyline and I have found an author that can… -maybe… - what the heck not go wrong in my manuscript (gods I hope I am so right!!! no matter Frost is divine!) I am addicted to her books and I’m not mortified by it!!!! Where do I begin? OH YES!  After doting on the author now about the masterpiece.
Halfway to the grave is the debut novel from new author Jeaniene Frost.  It follows the story of Catharine AKA CAT a vampire/human amalgam! Amateur vampire slayer YES! But a force to reckon with after! Bones… AKA Crispin, AKA Cat’s lover, the master vampire who teaches her all about killing vampires.  Together, they killed evil vampires, destroy a white slavery and fall hopelessly in love! This is a paranormal, YA, Funny action packed novel. OH!!! Lodes of innuendos and… ***(Imagine)***
Halfway To The Grave is a muddle of the urban fantasy and romance genres and it mixes potently! For an unveiling author Jeaniene Frost shows enormous assurance!!! I laughed and cried and I loved it! I dove into the next book immediately! All the while getting dark looks from my husband for ignoring him in favor of a book!

"I'm saying that I'm a moody, insecure, narrow-minded, jealous, borderline homicidal bitch, and I want you to promise me that you're okay with that, because it's who I am, and you're what I need."  Quoted... OMG ok I have definitely been living under a rock. WTH how I was unknown to this series is beyond my comprehension. J Frost writes without holding back. Humor, action, lust, love, lies and even some betrayal all play a part in this great story. We are in the POV of Cat, a wild ravenous female who is out for revenge. Why? The answer to that itself lies with the story. Half Vampire half human she is blessed with powers way beyond Buffy the vampire slayer. It is during this revengeful quest we are curtly introduced to Bones. Just saying his name sends shivers down my spine. An old English brassy and sarcastic vamp with his own agenda at hand. When these two stubborn mules meet an adventure that keeps you up wee hours of the morning is unraveled. Will Cat get her revenge? Who is Bones and is he one to be trusted. With an ending that just leaves your jaw dropped, Halfway To the Grave is a great supernatural romance. At the end I was actually dreaming of Crispin taking a bite out of me.

Title: One foot in the Grave
Author: Jeaniene Frost
Series: Night Huntress # 2
Publisher: Avon
Paperback: 357
Publication Date: April 29th 2008
You can run from the grave, but you can’t hide
Half-vampire Cat Crawfield is now Special Agent Cat Crawfield, working for the government to rid the world of the rogue undead. She’s still using everything Bones, her sexy and dangerous ex, taught her, but when Cat is targeted for assassination, the only man who can help her is the vampire she left behind.Being around Bones awakens all her emotions, from the adrenaline rush of slaying vamps side by side to the reckless passion that consumed them. But a price on her head – wanted: dead or half-alive – means her survival depends on teaming up with Bones. And no matter how hard Cat tries to keep things professional between them, she’ll find that desire lasts forever … and Bones won’t let her get away again. Original.
One foot in the grave gives us a more grown-up Cat Crawfield! It’s been four years after the first book or since Cat’s saw Bones. Cat is now working for a special unit of the government that kills vampires-murdering humans. She is also the commanding officer of her specialized team and is operating under a secret identity.  Though she misses Bones, she still believes she’d done the right thing by leaving him to protect him.
Cat's life takes an unexpected twist, and when Bones shows up at her best friend's wedding and she realizes she’d much rather have bones in her life or nothing else!!!

The power couple kicked ass in the book, found some of cat’s estranged family members and they both finally stood up to Cat’s mother about being in love! Cat is so much more likable in this story.  She's more thoughtful in her decision-making but still the fearless woman we love and with 'Bones' by her side… they are almost unstoppable!
Frost has another winner in my book! She knows how to write and she keeps you entertained! I will never, not read her work because she is a contender!!!!
Favorite Quotes
"You know that old saying. Once you go dead, no one's better in bed” - Cat
"Why don't I just give you a pair of my panties to hang around your neck? Then whenever you feel jealous, you can wave them at whoever's pissing you off." - Cat

Jeaniene comes back with vengeance. Embracing sexuality, humor and true love. I have to admit it; I am addicted to this series now. There is no going back. We begin this series four years after Cat joined the FBI under a new alias, killing of ole bloggers as Bones would put it. Even though she did this voluntarily her heart aches for none other, but she fights to move on. Wit Cat being so great at her job she soon finds out that her head has a bounty, making way for the entire undead world to get her. How will she survive? You got it, with the help of yours truly Bones. But this new reunion ignites a fire that Cat is trying hard to suppress.

Can they find who put the bounty on Cat before it's too late, and will Cat succumb to her intense feeling for Bones? We also, meet a few more interesting characters, Denise, Tate, Ian and who could forget Annette? These characters are all unforgettable. I am hungry for the next book. Two thumbs up. I will end by saying-
"And that, Annette, is called Pilates"  _-Cat

Title: At Grave’s End
Author: Jeaniene Frost
Series: Night Huntress # 3
Publisher: Avon
Paperback: 342
Publication Date: January 1st 2009
It should be the best time of half-vampire Cat Crawfield’s life. With her undead lover Bones at her side, she’s successfully protected mortals from the rogue undead. But though Cat’s worn disguise after disguise to keep her true identity a secret from the brazen bloodsuckers, her cover’s finally been blown, placing her in terrible danger.
As if that wasn’t enough, a woman from Bones’s past is determined to bury him once and for all. Caught in the crosshairs of a vengeful vamp, yet determined to help Bones stop a lethal magic from being unleashed, Cat’s about to learn the true meaning of bad blood. And the tricks she’s learned as a special agent won’t help her. She will need to fully embrace her vampire instincts in order to save herself—and Bones—from a fate worse than the grave.
At grave’s end is another shocking winner!!! After the second book, I went head long for the third… And? It was better! In this installment, Cat and Bones are living together, in love and going steady. Oh gosh! They’re married too! Basically, the cat is out of the bag! Cat's mother has to deal whether she approves or not!

At grave’s end is a non-stop action thriller, though there was less sexual action between Cat and Bones in the bedroom.  We in fact see a deeper connection between Cat and Bones here, meaning there is a lot more to their relationship than SEX or yeah…!  The energy between the couple is still smothering, and I appreciated seeing deeper more emotional aspect to both characters in this epic third continuation!
It wasn’t all fun and dandy in this story, because half way into the book a great tragedy struck, that left me weeping… for true fans, the grief would be palpable, and jeaniene wrote this particular section with her heart rather than her pen. Well done!
We are also introduced to new characters and fun hilarious laugh out loud moment! Vlad is lodes of fun, Ian is stirring trouble … as usual and Spade is WOW Spade…(I want to lick him)!
The end of this book left me breathless!!! I loved every minute of it! All I know is If you haven't read the first two books in the series, what the heck...  are you waiting for???
( ***grins evilly***)Frost is getting better and better. And I don’t think there are words to justify how great of a writer she is!!! All I know is that these books aren't scholarly, and don't necessitate a lot of thought.  But these books are incredibly well thought off and well paced, and have a cast of very strong, unreservedly unforgettable characters.  I can’t wait to start book four…

Who would have thought this series could get any better? Well Jeaniene did.  I am held speechless by this book. Cat and Bones are trying to live a normal life as they can possible live under circumstances. Hey- not everyone is part of an elite FBI sector intent on the downfall of evil underworld, while at the same time managing to protect the human kinfolk in your life. But the harder they try to delve into normal the deeper they are pulled into the supernatural. Bones is given a great gift by his Grandsire, and with these great gifts also comes great responsibilities. This gift may lead to the very downfall of Cat.

" Life's a bitch and then you get stabbed” – Frost

We are also introduced into a slew of new characters- Bones' entourage has grown significantly, and I myself have grown an attachment to each one- Ian in particular....(don't ask why but I just have a weakness for him) This novel has a lot more action in it compared to the previous, but she still manages to make it sexy as well. Only Jeaniene can have you lusting for vamps in the middle of combat.

Vampire lore is definitely played out here, and around every corner; there may be a snitch. Who can you trust with your life?  Bones and Cat finds themselves fighting death - literally- in every way you can think possible. Will they be able to make it out unscathed? I give this a Blazing rank Two thumbs up all the way....

" We are not helpless...Many times in our lives we’ve been powerless, but not this night. Right now we have the power to choose the manner in which we die. If you have been a master of nothing else in all your days, you are now a master of this moment. And I for one am going to give such an answer to this insult that others will dearly regret not being by my side to see it! Into battle we go” - Bones

Title: Destined for an Early Grave
Author: Jeaniene Frost
Series: Night Huntress # 4
Publisher: Avon
Paperback: 355
Publication Date: July 28th 2009
Her deadly dreams leave her in grave danger...Since half-vampire Cat Crawfield and her undead lover Bones met six years ago, they've fought against the rogue undead, battled a vengeful Master vampire, and pledged their devotion with a blood bond. Now it's time for a vacation. But their hopes for a perfect Paris holiday are dashed when Cat awakes one night in terror. She's having visions of a vampire named Gregor who's more powerful than Bones and has ties to her past that even Cat herself didn't know about. Gregor believes Cat is his and he won't stop until he has her. As the battle begins between the vamp who haunts her nightmares and the one who holds her heart, only Cat can break Gregor's hold over her. She'll need all the power she can summon in order to bring down the baddest bloodsucker she's ever faced . . . even if getting that power will result in an early grave.
Destined For an Early Grave begins with Cat and Bones going on a much-needed vacation. Cat chose to go to Paris because she is unknowingly compelled to do so!!! And Bones would do anything to please Cat.  Vacation was going well until Mencheres started acting a little over bearing toward Cat!   Cat and Bones suspected something was going on!!!! Meaning Mencheres knows something and he isn’t telling!  Subsequently, Cat has been having a weird dream and she’s been continuingly having dreams about this man named Gregor AKA the dream snatcher! In the dream, Gregor claims to be Cat’s true husband!!!! Worst, Cat didn’t clue Bones in one the dream! Naturally, Bones went livid and his possessive and protective side ended up dominating his much needed rational side! It was hard for me to read my favorite power couple at each other’s throat.

Gregor wants Cat.

As it turns out, A few weeks before Cat and Bones met at the bar she was stolen by Gregor to Paris, he’d manipulated Cat into a Vampire marriage and Cat does not have any recollection of the incident!  Gregor has the power to see the future like mencheres, he’d seen Cat’s potential and he decided to steal Cat, before she’d met bones knowing they where destined to be together!!!!
The only person, who knows this apart from Gregor’s people, is Bones’s grandsire Mencheres!!! And! He erased Cats memories. Later we find out why he’d what he did!!! (Mencheres had seen Cat’s potentials and he’d also seen that Bones would love Cat some day)!
Cat knows her heart belongs to Bones, but she needs her memories back. Bones is scared and doesn't want Cat anywhere near Gregor. What if Cat regains her memories and wants to be with Gregor instead?  Worst Cat lets Gregor snatcher her from her dreams and deals with Gregor even after Bones tells her not to, he got fed up and left her!!!  The thought of Bones and Cat apart left me vacant!!! Nevertheless in the end… I remembered how much I enjoy reading jeaniene’s books!!!

The tension in this book is very thick and there are moments where I laughed and even better they’re where moments where I felt a blush creeping up my cheeks. Jeaniene kept things lively with the vampire fighting and deaths and there was a painful death in this book.
Destined For An Early Grave was a very enjoyable and entertaining read. Fans of this series will be very happy with the results particularly that of Cat and how she resolves her issues with her vampire birthright and her feelings for Bones.

Okay… Jeaniene, you have me speechless once again. Destined to the grave came back with ferocity and sexuality as its predecessors. Cat and Bones' love is put to an ultimate test. I was scared for them at some points. I fell in love with Vlad and Spade even more here. In this book Cat and Bones' marriage legitimacy is put into question when someone from Cat's past claims that he is her rightful husband. With this obstacle in their way the couple turn to the Ghoul Queen as they call her for help. Will it be enough? With existing vamp lore and boundaries Cat and Bones' chances are slim. How much can their love endure, will this be the breaking point for them? And when all that you love is being threatened to be taken away, what would you do? Great twist and turns in this book! Cat is also on a path of self-discovery that will reveal some crazy long kept secrets- secrets held by some of the vamps closest to the couple. Could not stop reading.

Title: This Side of the Grave
Author: Jeaniene Frost
Series: Night Huntress # 5
Publisher: Avon
Paperback: 357
Publication Date: February 22nd 2011
Danger waits on both sides of the grave.
Half-vampire Cat Crawfield and her vampire husband Bones have fought for their lives, as well as for their relationship. But just when they've triumphed over the latest battle, Cat's new and unexpected abilities threaten to upset a long-standing balance . . .With the mysterious disappearance of vampires, rumors abound that a species war is brewing. A zealot is inciting tensions between the vampires and ghouls, and if these two powerful groups clash, innocent mortals could become collateral damage. Now Cat and Bones are forced to seek help from a dangerous "ally"—the ghoul queen of New Orleans herself. But the price of her assistance may prove more treacherous than even the threat of a supernatural war . . . to say nothing of the repercussions Cat never imagined
This side of the grave is the fifth book in the series, which means more excitement from Bones and Cat!!!  In the last book, they were two major shake down, one. Cat’s unusual diet! And two. Rumors, flying around that Cat’s wants to be the O.B.1 for both Vamps and Ghouls!!! And who will forget Her bewildering abilities!!! In this book, a major coward, Apollyon is feeding the fears of the ghouls, turning them into fanatics and plotting to get rid of Cat!!! (Over Bone’s dead body)! Now that Cat and Bones are having this problem, and master less vamps are getting attacked and the leader of the ghouls is rising up to bring Cat down. Bone and Cat decides to seek help from Marie the Undead psycho, Oops… I meant the undead Queen of New Orleans… who. In fact has her own reason for `helping' Cat. (With a major pay out I might add!) Mostly, this book hubs on the hunt to find Apollyon, the coward as well as trying to find out where the Undead Queen stands in the up coming war.  This was a great read and I loved every minute of it!!! Frost is a good writer, I know I have said it many times, but I just cant say it enough! She writes for adults and you can’t help but enjoy the ride!!!  Her books are filled with humor, action and it’s thrilling to the extent that you find yourself smiling for no reason because a quote from her book or a dialogue that stayed with you!!! The best part of this book is the fact that since Cat had become a full vamp, she and Bone's relationship is a rock!!! With no room for doubt and I loved that about this book!!! Also, Cat is finally coming into her own she has tremendous powers at her disposal, she's teamed up with leaders and friends, and She trusts Bones!!!  Painful, part about this book??? DON!!!! BUT, Frost knows how to mix humor, action, pain and sex so potently that it makes me eager for the next book I cannot wait!
Favorite Quotes…
Timmy- “Before we go, I gotta know: If mind-reading abilities are real, there something else I wondered if fiction got right about vampires---“ “Ask me if I sparkle and I’ll kill you where you stand,” Bones cut him off with utmost seriousness” -Bones.

Just what the doctor prescribed for my problem...More Bones. When you think there is no more originality to this line , she proves you wrong, and keeps bringing it on. This Side of The Grave kicked way better than Buffy ever did, and Angel, could never compare to Bones, Spade or Vlad. Sexy Vampire gods in my opinion. In this book, Cat has to adjust to a few new things- her new status as full time vamp, her mom being a vamp, and Don's sickness. Like if that as not enough some ghoul is out spreading rumors about Cat being the apocalyptic Demon to bring an end of all ghouls. Hence this equals another war. OMG. With memorable quotes like - "What the hell was that?" - “Premature inflamulation,” he [Vlad] replied. “Happens sometimes. Very embarrassing, I don’t like to talk about it.” and -  "How could he be affectionate with me right after this latest cluster fuck – literally!" – was beyond my comprehension. I was truly entertained to the end.  In this one, Jeaneane writes firce and sexy, having you turning the pages non-stop. Are your friends really to be trusted or should you trust the enemy of your enemy. Never underestimate a man. Figuratively speaking.  Can't wait for the next one I was thrilled in every way right through my Bones.

Title: This Side of the Grave
Author: Jeaniene Frost
Series: Night Huntress # 6
Publisher: Avon
Paperback: 358
Publication Date: August 30th 2011
Having narrowly averted an (under) world war, Cat Crawfield wants nothing more than a little downtime with her vampire husband, Bones. Unfortunately, her gift from New Orleans' voodoo queen just keeps on giving-leading to a personal favor that sends them into battle once again, this time against a villainous spirit.

Ahhh…. I so missed Kat and Bones... Another good read, but I feel as if this one was not as aggressive as it's predecessors. None- the - less I got my fill for now. This book follows Kat and Bones when they are finally looking to catch some alone. But as usual someone needs his or her help. This time Fabian who is seeking help for a love interest of his visits Kat. Apparently every year an old sadistic ghost reemerges from the depths of hell set on a good witch hunt. And to top it off there is a new boss in town down at the old quarters who seems like he has a vendetta against everything vampire. Can Kat stop him? How do you even kill a ghost? This is by far their most formidable enemy. I was at the edge of my seat really thinking we were going to loose Kat. Good read but I will say not as.... On e and A Half thumbs

*Sigh* this series is A M A Z I N G!!! I still have to read the 5th. book I'm hoping with my entire being that I win your giveaway :D pretty please? hehe
One of my favorite series, I want to know what you think of Cat on the third book...she got on my nerves in that book, sometimes I wish I could slap her haha

Dawn & Winnie Book Reviews said...

I liked Cat in the third book!!! she wanted to help Bones, and she needed to feel like his equal, yet she hadn't fully registered that some part of her is still biased towards Vampires. She loves him so naturally, she wants to help him. Plus remember the tragedy with Bone and Petra??? She grieved! Almost died in fact and that made me like her even more!

However, if you've read book four, her heroic actions almost made her lose bones!!!

Book five is Amazing, and I liked it
August 30th can't come soon enough... until then...

Don't get me wrong, I still liked the book and will continue to read the series hoping Jeaniene Frost will bring back some of what I love about these characters. I'm also anxious to see if she continues her Night Huntress World series. I would love to read some stories dedicated to Ian, Tepesh and Tate. Still recommend the series.
