Steampunk is a genre that
I’m unfamiliar with,
hence I got curious and decided to read Suzanne Lazear’s Innocent Darkness.
Lazezr’s writing is interesting, but strange nonetheless; I like her world
building and her attention to details. Her
character names are catching and fun. I love the cover art and for a debut
book, it was a just start.
Innocent
Darkness, a fitting name if I may add… is about a girl, Noil who is supposed to
act like a lady, demure, dimwitted, addlebrained and a pretty muted robot, except
she wants to be free, free to create, read and be her vibrant self. Since she
couldn’t be tamed and trouble seems to follow her around just for kicks, Noli
was sent to an institution were the proprietor claims that they could fix
troubled girls like Noil…and purge Noli’s unladylike ways. Magnolia’s best
friend, Steven who has a huge secret of his own starts to feel uneasiness about
Noil and her lack of communication from the supposed institution, for one
thing, Steven knows that the institution is a reform school! Apprehension sets
in Steven’s gut… He decides to go after his best friend that he’s in love with.
Innocent Darkness is slow building, mysterious and curve ball twist. The ending
was a bit of shock and surprising.
With
that said, the heroine, Noli is vibrant, naïve, stubborn yet stupid to an
extent that is of putting. Her lack of
sense gives the book a layer of imminent love triangle that didn’t seem to fit
the storyline and a bit frustrating, though, I am sure the author has her
reasons. The dialogue was in fact lacking and a bit PG- 10! I couldn’t make
sense of what was going and… in the end… I found myself curious about book two…
Curious, yes! But not hyped.

The only Steampunk I have read so far is Gail Carriger's awesome series, but that has convinced me to give other books a try. I'm not sure about this one though... even though I like the cover a lot! :)
I guess I am a little on the 3 side because it wasn't truly Wowed...

Excellent review! I read this a couple months ago and agree with much of what you said. Gah, the love-triangle was annoying, but I liked the steampunk elements. :)
