Dawn & Winnie Book Reviews
The Host (The Host #1)By Stephenie MeyerMelanie Stryder refuses to fade away. Our world has been invaded by an unseen enemy. Humans become hosts for these invaders, their minds taken over while their bodies remain intact and continue their lives apparently unchanged. Most of humanity has succumbed. When Melanie, one of the few remaining "wild" humans, is captured, she is certain it is her end. Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, was warned about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the glut of senses, the too-vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind. Wanderer probes Melanie's thoughts, hoping to discover the whereabouts of the remaining human resistance. Instead, Melanie fills Wanderer's mind with visions of the man Melanie loves - Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body's desires, Wanderer begins to yearn for a man she has been tasked with exposing. When outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off on a dangerous and uncertain search for the man they both love
I was a little reluctant to get this book at first. I was one of
the sappy twilight followers, but I could not make a connection between a good
romance novel and a good science fiction novel... But I was so right...yes
right to finally ignore my reluctance and get this book. From the moment I
picked it up, it never left my hand until I was done with it. This novel flows
well leaving no open ended questions. Earth as we know it no longer exists.
Aliens have taken over, but not in the "take me to your leader"
sense. instead they are a peaceful race which seems intent on making humanity
warless by taking over our bodies and brains and continuing the lives they took
over. Not all humans are to fond of this and of course there are rebels. The
unique thing about Melanie, is that she has been taken over, but her concous
self refuses to allow her new alien inhibitor take over. And so starts an
internal fight between Melanie and The Wanderer. In addition to this Rebels are
out to kill the wanderer and alien force is out to quell Melanie. Who to trust
who to go to. An odd alliance is formed by the most unlikely of characters, and
the fight continues while Melanie and the wanderer try to survive in the worst
of odds. This tale is heart warming, you truly see both sides to the story.
There is no good or bad in my opinion. Who are you gonna root for? Melanie or
The Wander?

The worth of a book is to be measured by what you can carry away from it. ~James Bryce
