Lies Beneath (Lies Beneath Series1) By Anne Greenwood Brown

Title: Lies Beneath
Author: Anne Greenwood Brown
Series: Lies Beneath # 1
Publisher: Delacorte Books for Young Readers
Hardcover: 303
Publication Date: June 12th 2012
Authors website:
Calder White lives in the cold, clear waters of Lake Superior, the only brother in a family of murderous mermaids. To survive, Calder and his sisters prey on humans, killing them to absorb their energy. But this summer the underwater clan targets Jason Hancock out of pure revenge. They blame Hancock for their mother's death and have been waiting a long time for him to return to his family's homestead on the lake. Hancock has a fear of water, so to lure him in, Calder sets out to seduce Hancock's daughter, Lily. Easy enough—especially as Calder has lots of practice using his irresistible good looks and charm on unsuspecting girls. Only this time Calder screws everything up: he falls for Lily—just as Lily starts to suspect that there's more to the monsters-in-the-lake legends than she ever imagined. And just as his sisters are losing patience with him.
Dark, Heart -pounding, frightening, fascinating and completely engrossing! Anne Greenwood Brown is a new Author for me. This is the 1st book of hers that I have read and it enthralls!  Beautiful Cover Art, eye-catching yet Deadly!  That’s “Lies Beneath” in a nutshell.
His adopted family has always raised Calder White with one thing etched in his mind. Revenge! Kill! Kill! Kill Jason Hancock!
The whites have spent the larger part of their lives planning the brutal death of Jason Hancock!  They spent decades stalking his old family’s house to no avail …then one day the Hancock’s moved back into town and finally the Whites would have their revenge!

Mayrice, Pav and Lulu are three of four mermaids they’re beautiful but deadly! Soulless really! Let's just say they’re nothing like Ariel…  and the fourth? He's a merman, Calder.  Calder White is the foundation of operation kill Hancock plan… His prize? Freedom… Whose?
The plan was simple… really…  seduce one of the Hancock’s daughters, get closer to Jason, bring him to the lake and we’d kill him…  “it was because of him… it was his fault that our…”
Except, Calder didn’t plan for Lily.

Lily Hancock was nothing Calder expected.  She was kind, warm, optimistic, conversational, pretty and there was something about her. Mer- people are known for their coldness and cruelty yet; Lily stirs something inside him that Calder couldn't fathom! All too soon he was happy he could produce his own emotions rather than stealing emotions from humans by drowning them at the bottom of the lake. His happiness is laced with fear and anxiety though, because his sisters wants Lily’s father dead! The worst part? Calder is now thinking of saving Jason instead of …well managing his killing project! In the end??? It wasn’t pretty!

The surprise was jaw dropping, Lies, betrayal, heartbreak and freedom! This book is dark and deadly, it didn’t have a happily ever after yet I can't wait for the sequel Deep Betrayal and the only thought in my mind, is what now? Okay that was two! Case in point…  creepy, but a very good book.

I love the world Greenwood has created; her portrayal of Mermaid wasn’t all romance… it was scary yet alluring… I love the storyline, the way it unfolds, the hero, Calder and his Lily, the tension and the thrill, the fact that their budding relationship is being fashioned on a knife’s-edge! The stolen kisses, the humor and the heart-wincing conclusion. Spectacular!

I don't really like books with an unhappy ending, but this book has always intrigued me and that feeling has only grown after reading your review. I guess this will have to be my exception...
